Keeping Your Personal Life Private Online

by Sheri Larsen

Theresa Regli has an interesting post on CMS Watch about the need to be very careful about the mix of professional and personal information in your online presence.  My approach is to maintain a try to maintain a strict separation of professional and private in my online presence.  All my online portfolios are professionally focused.  All my personal/family stuff is private.  I use different screen names and email addresses.  I block crawling of my personal/family blog.  It’s difficult, and I think I have probably mixed them occasionally, from a personal branding perspective I want a search on Sheri Larsen to bring back the professional me.

Facebook is the hardest, though.  You can’t prevent family members from wanting to connect with you and from posting private or potentially embarrassing information.
